What Is My IP Address? A Plain-English Guide
A clear, non-technical explanation of what an IP address is, why websites can see it, and what it does — and does not — reveal about you.
Your IP address is the public identifier your internet connection uses to talk to other servers on the internet. Whenever you load a website, your device sends a request, and the destination server needs an address to reply to — that address is your public IP.
What an IP can reveal
An IP address typically reveals approximate geolocation (often the nearest city of your ISP), your internet service provider, and whether the address belongs to a residential, mobile, hosting, or VPN network. It does not directly reveal your name, exact home address, or browsing history.
Public vs private IP
Inside your home network, your router assigns private IPs to each device (for example 192.168.1.42). These are invisible to the public internet. The public IP shown by IP Checker is the address your router uses to reach the outside world.
IPv4 vs IPv6
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.10. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1. Both are valid, and modern networks often have both. If you see an IPv6 address, that simply means your ISP and device support the newer protocol.
How accurate is the location?
IP geolocation is an estimate. For residential connections it is often accurate to the city or metro level, but it can be off by hundreds of kilometers, especially for mobile networks, satellite, corporate VPNs, or recently allocated IP ranges.
常见问题
Is my IP address sensitive personal data?
In many privacy frameworks (such as GDPR) IP addresses are treated as personal data. However, they are inherently visible to every server you connect to.
Can I hide my IP address?
Yes — a VPN, proxy, or the Tor network replaces your public IP with one belonging to the service you use.
Does my IP change?
Most residential IPs are dynamic and may change every few days or weeks. Static IPs are common on business connections.
