What to check when an IP lookup fails, returns empty data, or shows a clearly wrong location.
IP lookups can fail for several reasons. Most are easy to diagnose if you know where to look.
Lookup returns an error
- Make sure the input is an IP address or a bare domain (example.com, not https://example.com/path).
- Private and reserved ranges (127.0.0.1, 10.x, 192.168.x) cannot be geolocated.
- Rate limits: free tiers throttle aggressive use — try again in a minute.
Wrong city or country
See our article on why IP geolocation can be inaccurate. In short: ISP point of presence, mobile gateways, and VPNs can all skew the result.
Tanya Jawab (FAQ)
Can I report an incorrect location?
Yes — most providers (including ip-api) offer a correction form. Corrections take time to propagate.
